Why do you need to maintain your site?

Too often a website owner is “handed the keys” to their new site by a designer, developer, marketing specialist, or agency with very little guidance on how to proceed from there.  No matter how well (or how poorly) a website is built and set-up there will always be maintenance that needs to be done:

  1. Backups – These should be configured at an interval that provides the most resilience if your site were to lose any data. If your site is rarely updated with content and isn’t an e-commerce site or daily blog then a back-up taken on a weekly basis should be sufficient. An e-commerce site that sees frequent orders from customers should be placed on an hourly back-up interval.
  2. Up-time monitoring – If your site goes down you or your support team need to know about it.
  3. WordPress patches/updates – Themes, plug-ins, and WordPress frequently receive patches to resolve bugs and security vulnerabilities as well as updates that improve functionality and compatibility with WordPress and other plug-ins. When these patches/updates are neglected, your site can experience downtime, can malfunction (or not function at all), as well as fall victim to security exploits. In some cases these patches/updates can cause problems– we perform these updates carefully, taking precaution to protect your data and to not disrupt your site’s functionality.
